Heart Shaped Scones
A very cute (and quick!) Valentine's day treat to make this weekend!
Valentine’s day always sneaks up on me, but it really (!) caught me off guard this year! One minute we’re enduring day after day of never ending January, the next minute… it’s February 13th! So here’s an incredibly cute and easy last-minute Valentine’s treat to save the day: heart shaped chocolate chip scones!
If you’re looking at these and thinking “they’re too cute, they’ll never last an hour in my home”… you are 100% correct. My family of 4 devoured these little cuties in minutes. And even my toddlers appreciated the “cute” factor. Which is saying a lot since usually they’re just focused on the chocolate.

If you have older kids, or a partner who loves baking, this could be a fun baking project to do together. My kids love pressing the heart shaped cookie cutter through the scone dough! Just try not to twist the cookie cutter when lifting it up. This can cause the scone dough to seal, which can prevent the dough from puffing up in the oven. And we definitely want it to puff up in the oven… all those flaky, buttery layers is what makes a scone, well, a scone!
P.S. if you don’t have a heart shaped cookie cutter, you can still make these! Just press the dough out into a standard disk, cut it into 8 wedges, and bake! You might need to bake for a few more minutes to get them golden brown and cooked through.
Heart Shaped Scones
Makes about 10 scones
2 and 2/3 cups (320g) all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 Tablespoon (14g) baking powder
1/2 cup (106g) light brown sugar, packed
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 stick (113g) unsalted butter, VERY cold and cut into tiny pieces
1 large egg, cold
3/4 cup (170ml) heavy cream
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
8 ounces mini chocolate chips or regular chocolate chips (I did 50/50 and used both)
For the egg wash:
1 large egg, well beaten
1 teaspoon water
Combine egg and water in a small bowl and beat well to combine. This is your egg wash.
Instructions
Preheat oven to 400°(F). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and it set aside.
In a large bowl combine flour, salt, baking powder, brown sugar and cinnamon and mix well to combine.
Cut the butter into small cubes then work it into the mixture (using your fingers, two forks, or a pastry cutter) until it resembles a coarse meal.
In a glass measuring cup whisk together the egg, cream, and vanilla. Add the liquid mixture to the flour mixture.
Add in the chocolate chips. Use a fork to stir everything together until just moistened. Don’t worry if the dough looks shaggy!
Empty the loose dough out onto a clean, lightly floured work surface. Knead the dough a few times, then pat it into a 2-inch square.
Using a 3-inch heart shaped cookie cuter, cut out as many hearts as you can. Re-roll the scraps of dough and cut out more scones.
Carefully transfer the heart scones to the prepared sheet, placing them 2″ apart.
Lightly brush each scone with the egg wash.
Bake for 16 minutes, or until firm and lightly golden brown on top.
Allow scones to cool for 10 minutes on the baking sheet.
